Execs Back to School With the Dataiku GenAI Field Trip

Last week, a select group of executives traded their ties for Trapper Keepers as they embarked on the Exec Connect GenAI Field Trip in Boston. The vibe? A nostalgic "back to school" atmosphere, complete with debate club, lectures, classrooms, and a spirit of curiosity. But instead of history or algebra, the subject of the day was (what else?) Generative AI — a topic as fresh and uncharted as it gets in the world of the enterprise.

Generative AI makes even the most experienced professionals feel a bit like we did on those first days of school: full of promise, but also let’s be honest, a bit nervous. There’s still a lot to learn and plenty of questions to answer. 

We’re all students again, figuring out how to navigate this powerful, but still enigmatic, technology. This wasn’t just a field trip—it was a crash course in the future of AI, and the lessons learned here are bound to shape how businesses interact with this transformative technology. So, what did we learn in class? Let’s dive into the day’s key lessons.

Embrace the Uncertainty

One of the overarching themes of the event was the inherent uncertainty of AI. Much like students learning a new subject, organisations are navigating uncharted territory with Generative AI. The technology, while powerful, comes with unknown risks. AI touches nearly every part of business, but its long-term effects are still unclear. 

Harvard’s Jonathan Zittrain left us with the metaphor of AI as asbestos, which was a striking way to express this sentiment. Generative AI is everywhere, it’s powerful, but at the same time we don’t fully understand it yet. Because of that, companies need to take an inventory of their AI deployments (this applies to Generative AI of course but also so-called “traditional” machine learning while we’re at it), ensuring they monitor impact and potential risks carefully.

But beyond the caution, there’s excitement, too. Generative AI models are improving rapidly, and while they may not always be truthful, they’re becoming indispensable tools in the modern enterprise. In fact, presenter Hyoun Park, CEO and Principal Analyst at Amalgam Insights, spoke to us about how emerging technologies become foundational technologies — Generative AI is next.

The key takeaway? Organizations need to embrace AI’s potential while accepting that it comes with uncertainty. It’s about planning for flexibility and being ready to pivot as the technology evolves. 

Our product team echoed this theme in presenting Dataiku’s approach to Generative AI, which is centered around the LLM Mesh. At its core, the Dataiku LLM Mesh addresses this uncertainty by enabling choice among a growing number of Generative AI services. It acts as a secure API gateway to break down hard-coded dependencies, managing and routing requests between applications and underlying services. 

So if you’re wondering, “Should I build my Generative AI-powered application on top of today’s best model? Or should I hold out just a little longer until a new one emerges that’s more accurate, powerful, or better suited for my use case?” Know that with Dataiku, you don’t have to choose.

AI Needs a Band, Not a Soloist

Another key theme of the event was the importance of collaboration in making AI successful. Generative AI, while impressive, can’t function effectively on its own. 

First, we heard from our CEO Florian Douetteau with a literal band analogy. He likens LLMs to the singer in a band — yes, they may have talent, but they need backup to create a full, harmonious sound (not to mention the right promotion from the right people to draw a crowd). Without the band and the support system that it provides, they sing off key or forget the words — read: they hallucinate. Plus, they’re really demanding, meaning they can cost more than you expect and require lots of resources. AI agents and their components have the potential to be very powerful, but it’s our job to prevent them from messing up.

We also heard from a few Dataiku customers, including System1 and Macquerie, who talked about what it takes to bring the band together in the real world. For Macquerie, that means sharing best practices across business units to break down silos. And for System1, it’s about building trust by focusing on value above all as well as accelerating the data team’s ability to execute. 

The bottom line is that to ensure Generative AI delivers real value, organizations need to take a multi-faceted approach. This involves building robust AI ecosystems where LLMs are supported by other AI tools, governance structures, and collaborative efforts across teams. The analogy of building a successful AI band emphasized the importance of integrating AI tools into broader enterprise systems, ensuring they work together seamlessly to deliver transformative results.

Fostering a Student Mindset

Perhaps one of the most powerful themes of the day was the importance of maintaining a “student mindset” within organizations. As AI continues to evolve, so too must the people working with it. Continuous learning and openness to new ideas are critical for success in the AI space. 

This mindset isn’t just about acquiring technical knowledge — it’s about fostering a culture of collaboration, vulnerability, and honesty. Leaders need to be open to feedback and willing to change their perspectives as they learn from their peers, employees, and even AI itself.

For example, one of my favorite moments of the day were the afternoon classrooms. One of the rooms had the hot topic “Architecting Your Technology Strategy for a GenAI-Driven Future,” and they engaged in a full-on debate club, working through topics like:

  • Do organizations need to use open-source LLMs that they run and manage themselves for their most sensitive data?
  • Should enterprises that are not in the business of building LLMs ever fine-tune an LLM?
  • … and so much more!

This was an exercise in the student mindset, seeing problems from multiple angles and learning from each other to work through hard questions.

This emphasis on learning, growth, and adaptation mirrors the broader message of the event: the future of AI is not set in stone, and success will come to those who are willing to keep learning, experimenting, and evolving alongside the technology.

Conclusion: Preparing for the Journey Ahead

As the Dataiku Executive Field Trip came to a close, the overarching message was clear: Generative AI is both an exciting and uncertain frontier. Its potential is vast, but its challenges are equally significant. To thrive in this new era, businesses must embrace a flexible approach, collaborate across teams and technologies, and foster a culture of continuous learning.

The journey into AI has only just begun, and like students returning from a field trip, we’ve gathered the insights and lessons we need to navigate the road ahead.
