SLB: Powering AI and Analytics Across the Energy Value Chain

Use Cases & Projects, Dataiku Product, Scaling AI Romain Doutriaux

More than ever, organizations have been able to move from lofty goals to real-world AI implementations. When it comes to deeply embedding analytics throughout the organization, though, SLB has been a longtime leader. What started as a small electric prospecting company in France in 1927 is now the upstream and downstream worldwide oil and gas leader — an organization that relies heavily on analytics from seismic data processing and well testing to directional drilling and carbon capture.

It was a natural step for SLB to team up with Dataiku to continue to enhance its commitment to analytics, AI-enabled services, and digital solutions. Combining existing SLB digital tools and solutions with the proven Everyday AI technology from Dataiku meant a ready-to-deploy full machine learning solution available at enterprise scale to the whole Exploration and Production (E&P) industry.

Schlumberger

The companies embarked on a strategic partnership in 2018 on a few use cases and the relationship has become stronger over time. The partnership with Dataiku has enabled SLB to drive improvements and save millions on use cases ranging from interpretation and processing of well logs, fault interpretations, drilling time reduction, and HR optimization (including reducing model turnaround time from 18 months to 8 days).

But don’t take our word for it! Watch this video to hear 3 SLB leaders explain how they used Dataiku to empower their employees and customer organizations to use data for everyday decision making (and enable non-data experts to take advantage of data science workflows).

Dataiku is a very powerful tool that makes data and AI part of the everyday decision making process."

-Kari Anne Kjolaas-Holland, Director of Digital Operations Solutions at SLB

As an example, SLB needed a single data science and AI platform to access the SLB domain data through no- and low-code code interfaces, where prior work is easily discoverable, and the technology is close to the systems where the insights and models will be deployed to.

With Dataiku, SLB has implemented a mechanism where its data scientists and technical experts can leverage:

  1. The Dataiku data catalog to access curated domain views of SLB business systems’ data
  2. Dataiku’s code samples and custom plugin capabilities to access high frequency historical environmental exposure of SLB drilling equipment
  3. Dataiku visual and code recipes to build insights and models to improve well construction performance and reliability
  4. Dataiku automation and API node capabilities and its close integration with BI solutions, to easily make models and insights available to wider populations in the field.

Watch the full video to uncover how Rajeev Sonthalia, President of Digital & Integration at SLB, thinks that SLB enables Everyday AI, both now and in the future.

I strongly believe that AI and machine learning can transform our industry and really reshape the future of energy by integrating our domain and digital capabilities with very, very powerful platforms like Dataiku."

-Rajeev Sonthalia

We’re confident that, with the active support of Dataiku, SLB is on the path to reshape the future of energy and we look forward to driving even more impact in the future.
